We investigate the interactions and feedbacks between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere using computational modelling and analysis of observational data from a variety of scales. Focus topics are:

  • What are the flows of carbon through vegetation systems and how do they impact the global terrestrial carbon sink?
  • What are the rates and drivers of tree mortality across the globe and how do they shape the structure, function and future of forests?
  • How does environmental stress affect productivity across different vegetation types from crops to forests?
  • How do anthropogenic actions interact with and link different components of the land system?

Scientific progress in our field is predominantly a collaborative effort. We collaborate widely with researchers at the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research, across Europe and the wider world (at last count, active collaborations with researchers from 5 continents and 15 countries).
